The Sanchez Greenway is partnership between Friends of Slow Sanchez and Friends of the Urban Forest to beautify Slow Sanchez by helping residents add sidewalk gardens to their properties.

 

Phase 1 of the Sanchez Greenway (20 gardens along Sanchez between 27th and 28th) will kick off April 23 with a community meeting at Noe Cafe from 6:30 to 7:30. Garden installations will complete by June 7.

Q: What is the Sanchez Greenway? A: A partnership to beautify Slow Sanchez by helping Sanchez residents add sidewalk gardens to their properties. 

 

Q: What is Phase 1 of the Sanchez Greenway? A: Phase 1 will install gardens on two blocks of Sanchez: from 27th to Duncan and from Duncan Street to 28th Street. Phase 1 will begin with a community meeting at Noe Cafe from 6:30-7:30 pm on Wednesday April 23 and complete on June 7. The next phase has not been scheduled but will likely not begin until early 2026.

 

Q: How did the Sanchez Greenway come about? A: The Sanchez Greenway is a partnership between Friends of Sanchez and Friends of the Urban Forest to 

 

Q: Who can participate in the Greenway? A: Homeowners who live along Slow Sanchez, which are the blocks of Sanchez between 23rd Street and Day Street. Phase 1 will focus on Sanchez homeowners between 27th and 28th.

 

Q: How can I apply to be part of the Greenway? A: Sanchez homeowners can apply by Requesting a Sidewalk Garden through the Friends of the Urban Forest website. Homeowners must agree to maintain their sidewalk gardens, however Friends of Slow Sanchez will provide volunteer gardeners to help. Renters can also apply, provided they have landlord approval.

 

Q: How will the Sanchez Greenway be rolled out? A: The project will be rolled out block by block. Priority blocks must have multiple homeowners who have requested sidewalk gardens and at least two neighbors who have agreed to be block captains. 

 

Q: What is a block captain? A: Block captains help collaborate with their neighbors to answer questions and submit sidewalk garden applications. After the gardens are planted, block captains coordinate with neighbors to request volunteer gardening help from Friends of Slow Sanchez.

 

Q: How are sidewalk gardens created? A: Friends of the Urban Forest will design the garden (using native and drought-tolerant plants), take care of permitting, and manage concrete removal. 

 

Q: Why are sidewalk gardens good? A: Sidewalk gardens beautify neighborhoods, create a natural habitat for butterflies and bees, reduce stormwater runoff, and increase the lifespan of adjacent trees. 

 

Q: How much does this cost? A: Homeowners will be asked to pay a portion of the cost for installing sidewalk gardens. Much of the costs will be paid by donations from the community. Friends of Slow Sanchez has raised over $22,000 of donations so far to support the Sanchez Greenway. Pricing is as follows:

  • Small garden (20-60 square feet): $1,850 ($900 subsidized)

  • Medium garden (61-100 square feet): $3,000 ($2,000 subsidized)

  • Large garden (> 100 square feet): $3,000 per 100 square feet

 

Q: What is the subsidized price? Homeowners who can afford to pay the full price should do so. Homeowners who would like financial assistance can pay the subsidized price, with the balance paid by community donations. The goal is that every neighbor who wants a sidewalk garden should be able to get one.

Q: What if my house is not on a selected block? A: Blocks for phase 2 of the Sanchez Greenway will be selected based on number of garden applications submitted to Friends of the Urban Forest.
